San Antonio Eats – Casa Rio

Greetings from San Antonio! At the moment, I’m attending a research conference which I will honestly say the nerd in me is enjoying quite thoroughly! But I’ve gotta be honest – I’m just as excited about the crazy good food I’ve been hearing about in San Antonio especially the places surrounding the Riverwalk, where I’m currently staying. Isn’t it GORGE!?

So with that said, I’m on the search for some good eats while I’m in the area. And while it has crossed my mind to check out amazing review foodie sites, ie yelp.com or the like, I decided to try something completely unheard of – asking the locals. My first suggest led me here:

Of couuurse, I had to go Mexican. First, it’s one of my fave fave faaaaves and second, I hear San Antonio has some of the best I’ll ever have. Secretly though, I think the best ones yet are from those street carts, but I’ve yet to find one! Found this place after wandering around without a map (hahah I’m practicing my spontaneity – can you tell? ). I was getting positive vibes. Positive foodie vibes.

I ended up ordering their special, which could have fed a family of three thousand. This was just the starter, btw. On the regular, I’m so used to the uh, usual basket of chips and salsa. What’s all this cheese business? I felt spoiled. It was off to a good start. Not to mention the weather was a fantastic sunny 60 degrees.

Let me just say now, that I had enough to feed myself dinner and still have some leftover. It was just that much food. I seem to have forgotten to take a picture of the corn tortillas that also came with the meal. Yes, it was ridiculous. For $9, this was a crazy steal. As for the food itself, it was just like any other taco or tamale I’ve had before. The chili con carne was pretty good actually, and probably my favorite (That portion above the rice). Not so much an epiphany in my mouth but it wasn’t a bad place to start.

Eating by the river definitely was a plus. Had I brought some friends, I probably would have asked the on demand mariachi to serenade us with tune or two. I’m just corny that way. In the meantime, the hunt must continue. Adios for now!

Oh, and I found a mall & all was well with the world again =). It’s somewhere to the right of this huge red ribbon.
